Best Bets for Holiday Jobs
October is the biggest month for seasonal hiring, according to a recent article by Fortune magazine. Basically, companies want to get you trained now so you are ready to go by the time the post-black Friday crunch rolls around.
Well, where should you be looking for holiday work? Although the job market will be tougher this year due to the projected downturn in holiday sales, Fortune recommends looking at a number of industries beyond the traditional slate of retailers:
- Internet retailers - Looking to bulk up their call center and order fulfillment staff to handle the increased load of orders.
- Movie theaters - Big family blockbusters mean higher ticket sales.
- Restaurants/catering services – Holiday parties are still big business.
- Shipping companies – More packages are being moved, which results in the need for more drivers and package handlers.
- Tax preparation firms – Although April 15th is still pretty far away, H&R Block and Jackson Hewitt will be looking to groom new employees for the tax season over the winter.
At the end of the day, just like looking for any job, preparation and persistence are key. Thorough application forms, updated resumes, and sharp interviewing skills will go a long way when coupled with the persistence to apply to many opportunities and follow up with the recruiters. Good luck.
